Things Apartment Managers Should Be Thrown In the Stocks For
We need to bring back locking people in the stocks in the town square and pelting them with produce of questionable quality.
I'm only just starting my apartment search and I'm already fed up with the trifling of the managers I'm dealing with. They're wasting my time, patience, and sanity, all three of which are already in remarkably short supply.
Here's what's pissed me off this week:
- Advertising "CATS OK!" then having a no pets policy
- not including the square footage, pet policy, or information on parking or laundry on their website
- directing me to Zillow to find the above after insisting I use their website instead of Zillow
- informing me after three days of back and forth that they don't allow pets after I mentioned our two cats four different times
- continuing to message me after I informed them that a no pets policy is a deal breaker (different from above)
- continuing to message me after I told them to stop messaging me after they continued to message me after I informed them that a no pets policy is a deal breaker
- not mentioning anywhere that the complex is seniors only
- no fridge or stove in the unit, like are you kidding me?
- non-refundable application fees of over $100
- non-refundable application fees of over $100 PER RESIDENT
- $300 a month pet fee
- rude phrasing like "don't bother applying if--"
- cancelling last minute and asking if I can reschedule for three days later after I've told them several times I travelled 7.5 hours from out of state, took time off of work, and rented a hotel specifically to view this particular unit
- Not showing up to the tour, calling me and giving me step-by-step instructions on how to get into the building, locate the keys, and let myself into an empty apartment like some kind of demented real life escape room
- Bug bombs still sitting in the damn rooms along with the dead bugs
- Being 45 minutes late then getting mad when I bailed on the rest of the showings
Unsurprisingly, we haven't found a place yet. I understand I will have to endure the standard levels of management bullshittery, but at some point I'm going to stop being nice about it.
I can understand why there is a trend of people just buying a van and living on the road. It's tempting. But my cats would hate it, and the correlation of "couples living on the road in a van" and "couple living on the road in a van getting murdered" is a little too strong for me.
But damn it would be really nice to deal with a moderately sane and reasonable person for once.
